Tech Support Scams

October 2020 Newsletter

Tech support scams are an industry-wide issue where scammers use scare tactics to trick you into paying for unnecessary technical support services that supposedly fix device, platform or software problems.

The scammer poses as a “security expert” calling to say that your computer has been infected and they can help you. Some will offer to fix your PC if you give them remote access to your computer. Others will ask you to download a tool, that will solve the problem.

Scammers might also initiate contact by displaying fake error messages on websites you visit, displaying support numbers and enticing you to call.

Regardless, in the end, they generally try to charge a large fee for their so-called services. If you refuse to pay, they could lock down your computer.

Tech companies will never call you like this, so don’t give them any personal information. If you’re ever unsure if a phone call or email message is legitimate, feel free to contact the Arvig Help Desk at 877.290.0560.
